'To Kill a Mockingbird’ Finally Becoming an E-Book
The author Harper Lee has agreed to release her Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, “To Kill a Mockingbird” — one of only a few remaining classics currently available only in print — as an e-book on July 8, HarperCollins Publishers has announced.
Ms. Lee, who turned 88 on Monday, said in a statement that the digital release is “‘Mockingbird’ for a new generation,” and added, “I’m still old fashioned. I love dusty old books and libraries.”
With more than 30 million copies sold worldwide since it was first published in 1960, according to HarperCollins, “To Kill a Mockingbird,” along with another holdout, J.D. Salinger’s “The Catcher In the Rye,” represented a large literary gap in the digital reading library. It continues to sell one million copies a year and is a staple in classrooms and reading programs across the country.
The news was announced almost a year after Ms. Lee filed a lawsuit against her former literary agent, Samuel Pinkus, accusing him of improperly collecting royalties from “Mockingbird” since 2007. The case was settled last September.
The e-book’s release will mark the 54th anniversary of the novel’s original publication. A digital audio version, narrated by Sissy Spacek, will be made available the same day. HarperCollins acquired the North American rights, while Random House will assume the rights in Britain.
